There
is not one person alive today who has not had the odiferous experience of
driving downwind of a large feedlot. EWWW! Everyone in the car makes a face
and holds their nose. And the windows were rolled UP!
Face it. Feedlots are a BAD IDEA. Okay, so they are a more efficient way to
produce beef, blah-de-blah. What about the long term effects? Haven't we
already seen enough trouble with BSE (Mad Cow disease) and E-Coli? What's
next? The facts are that cattle were never meant to be in feedlots.
We can't completely blame the producers. Part of the blame belongs to you
and me as consumers. For some strange reason, when we walk by the meat
counter at the grocery store, we develop temporary amnesia as our hungry
stomachs fall victim to rows of pretty white Styrofoam plates with meat
placed neatly on top. Who thinks of stinky feedlots at a moment like that?

The meat says USDA inspected. With all those bright labels "Certified Angus
Beef", "Certified Hereford Beef", "Prime", "Choice", "Special!!!" it just
has to be good, right? Worst of all, today's consumer has no concept of GOOD
beef. There is no comparison reference. For those of us "in the know"
grocery store beef has tasted like dirty socks for the past 10 years. Hmmmmm.....
Maybe it has something to do with those stinky feedlots.
Cattle forced to wallow in muck for weeks before slaughter will:
1- NOT be healthy
2- NOT taste good
3- NOT be healthy for YOU!
Who wants to eat beef that stood hock deep in manure all day? Not me! No
wonder there are so many vegetarians nowadays.
Next time you walk by that beef counter, consider purchasing your beef on
the hoof instead. Put it in your back yard for a few months and feed it
well. Slaughter it at a local, trustworthy butcher's. Or, better yet, do it
yourself. The beef with taste GOOD. It will BE GOOD for you. And best of
all, you'll know it.
Conduct a taste test. There'll be no comparison.
